Kausarnag (or Kausar Nag) is a high-altitude alpine lake located in the Pir Panjal Range of Jammu & Kashmir’s Kulgam district, perched at roughly 3,500–3,962 meters above sea level and known for its crystal-clear oligotrophic waters fed by snowmelt; stretching about 1.5–3 km in length and up to nearly 1 km in width, it forms the source of the Veshaw River that later cascades at the famous Aharbal Waterfall. Surrounded by towering Pir Panjal cliffs and pristine alpine meadows, the lake offers dramatic mountain reflections and a remote, untouched landscape, making it a prized destination for trekkers and nature lovers. Kausarnag also carries deep spiritual significance, historically referred to as Kramasaras and linked to ancient legends such as the story of Manu’s boat after the great flood. The most common approach is through Aharbal, with a multi-day trek via Kungwattan and Mahinag, typically covering around 36 km, and the best time to visit is from June to September when the snow has melted and the trail is accessible, as the lake remains frozen and unreachable during winter.
