Sheeshnag
Sheshnag Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, located about 23 km from Pahalgam, and sitting at an elevation of roughly 3,590 meters (11,790 feet). The lake spans about 1.1 km in length and 0.7 km in width, and its oligotrophic nature gives it exceptionally clear, pure water. Surrounded by lush meadows, snow-clad peaks, and pristine Himalayan landscapes, it is known for its striking green waters that beautifully mirror the mountains, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. According to local legend and Hindu mythology, Sheshnag—the serpent king—is believed to reside here, giving the lake deep spiritual significance, and it also lies along the route to the holy Amarnath Cave, serving as a common stop for pilgrims. Travelers reach it by driving from Pahalgam to Chandanwari and then trekking or taking a pony for roughly 7 km to the lake, which freezes in winter and becomes inaccessible during heavy snowfall. The ideal time to visit is from June to September, when weather conditions and access are most favorable.
