Tarsar & Marsar Lakes

Tarsar & Marsar Lakes

Tarsar and Marsar are two alpine, oligotrophic lakes in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, set high in the Himalayas and separated by a high mountain ridge, which is why they are often called the “twin sisters.” Tarsar lies at about 3,795 m (12,450–12,500 ft), shaped like an almond and known for its waters that shift in color through the day, framed by meadows, snow-clad peaks, and pine forests. Marsar, nearby and slightly more remote, is shrouded in mist or clouds much of the time, giving it a mysterious, secluded charm — a place of serene beauty that’s less trodden, surrounded by rocky terrain and dramatic mountain backdrop. The trek to these lakes typically starts from the valley around Aru Valley (near Pahalgam), passing through lush meadows, forests, and mountain streams; trekkers often camp en route and reach Tarsar first, then continue to Marsar via ridges and high passes. The ideal period to visit is roughly from June to September, when the snow melts, trails are accessible, and alpine meadows along with the lakes are open for trekking and camping.
