Hari Parbat Fort
Hari Parbat Fort
Perched atop the hill known as Hari Parbat (also called “Koh‑i‑Maran”) overlooking Srinagar and the Dal Lake, Hari Parbat Fort is a historic citadel whose first defensive walls were built in 1590 by Akbar as part of his ambitious plan to establish a new capital at Srinagar though the project was never completed. The present fort structure, however, dates largely from the early 19th century under the Afghan governor Atta Mohammad Khan, who completed the fortifications. Within and around the ramparts one finds a remarkable tapestry of Kashmir’s religious and cultural diversity: there’s the hill’s sacred temple of Sharika Devi (worshipped by Kashmiri Pandits), shrines to Sufi saints, and even a Sikh gurudwara making the hill a symbol of communal harmony. From the fort you get sweeping panoramic views of Srinagar city, Dal Lake, and surrounding landscapes making it both a place of deep historical‑mythical significance and a scenic must‑see for visitors.
